Cabo San Lucas Fish Report-May 25,26,27

There is good news and bad news mixed in with this weekend tell-all. The good news first. Yellowfin are back! Not in droves mind you, but our anglers caught a few on Friday! Bad news is the waters were still really rough out there and those that could bare it, stayed out and maybe got lucky the others, well…..

First up we had Edwin and Anita Hargett out for the day on ReelRum with Ramon and Juan. These guys decided to play it safe and not go too far offshore. They stayed on the Cortez side about 25 miles up along the shoreline. They found a school of dolphin and managed to catch the first Yellowfin we have seen in quite sometime!!

The Gangwish fam, Deb, Paul, Jack and Trace headed out on RumRunnin for a 1/2 day. They thought they might try for a full day, but when the motion of the ocean took over, these guys came back with the 2 AmberJack they caught in tow and called it a day!

The Simmons Family, Brent, Jacque, Samantha, Jay and Taylor were off on El Nuevo for the day with Cappy Alex and Mate Jesus. They had an awesome day when they ran into a school of Dolphin and caught 4 Yellowfin Tuna in all. They took some with them to enjoy at a local restaurant.
Yummy!

Megha and Ryan Sheare were out for a 1/2 day aboard 28′ Tantrum. When the waves started getting taller than the boat, Megha threw in the towel and said it was time to head back! Unfortunately they were unable to catch any fish before they landed back on steady ground, maybe when they come back the seas will be better.

Anne and Mike Harris along with daughter Amber Nicols and Hubby Bryan ventured out on RedRum for the day. They had trouble finding the fish in all the swells as well.

The final casualty on Friday was Brandon Pruitt and his family who headed out on Colleens Magic. They ventured out about 30 miles before having to head back due to the rough water causing lots of sea sickness.

Saturday there was not much fish to be had offshore as Scott Yancey and Todd Pianin would tell you. John Hopkins and his sons, however, were not going down without a fight. They ventured everywhere possible and tried every type of fishing. Finally, when hope was almost lost, they started bottom fishing by the shoreline and caught 12 Mulegino (a nice eating fish) and a Grouper, they were NOT going home empty handed!

Last but not least, our lone boat that went out this Sunday was Jere Truett and his hunting buddies. They had 2 Striped Marlin strikes, saw about 5 more Marlin but had no luck getting one to the boat.

Here’s kissing the weekend goodbye and looking toward a week FULL of FISH! Amen………

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report- May 24

Well, this Thursdays fishing report is going to look a lot like last Thursdays when the water temperature dropped about 9 degrees. Since then, the fishing has been spotty at best, you never know what you might get.

The only highlight of the day was Corey Gulbranson who was out with friends Doug, Nick and Lauren. These guys found some fingers of warm water on the inshore and managed to catch 2 Skipjack and a nice size Yellowtail that they enjoyed for dinner.

Tyler Moyer on RedRUm, Twins Mark and Matt Rochranbeck on ReelRum, La Familia Brooks with Richard, Mary and Michael and Craig Story and his party from Colorado aboard Colleens Magic all suffered the same fate. Due to rough seas, huge swells and some sea sickness, these guys all came back empty-handed. We sure do hate days like these, but since I am obligated to print the truth, good, bad and ugly, it is what it is. All we can do is pray to the fish gods that the fish will return and conditions will improve!

Thanks for reading.

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report- May 22nd/23rd

Dorado and Tuna are coming, I can feel it… That is all I can say!

Rick, Sandi, Chad, Jaimie and Cory Samson, along with Tessa Belk fished with Nuevo on the 22nd. They were scheduled to fish Rum Runnin’ but got a free upgrade because Rum Runnin was having a few problems. They didn’t have a ton of luck, but were an awesome family and were super gracious. They did catch one nice Dorado that they were planning to bring back to their resort to get cooked up!

Tom Cavanaugh and his crew were meat hunting today and they scored 2 huge Yellowtail and 8 Bonita. Not a bad day on the inshore!

On the 23rd we got another crazy fog layer, northwest wind, and rough seas. April and May can be like this. Ryan and Lindsey Russ along with friends Justin and Cara Hoover joined us for a half-day on RedRum today. Ryan and Lindsey have fished with us before and it was great to have them back. They were brave enough to get on the water, but stayed close to shore and I couldn’t blame them. They had a nice morning on the water and wrangled a Roosterfish to the boat!

Alex Adams fished with the boys on Big Papi today, all by his lonesome! Alex just graduated from LSU (Go Purple) and this trip was his graduation present. The whole fam was out on the 50′ Viking Fearless Monday, but today Alex was the only angler who was hardcore enough to get out and get after it. If you have to be on a boat by yourself, you either pick RedRum or Big Papi because Americo and Ulyses, the two mates on those boats are not shy about talking to you. Alex came back empty handed, saying it was really rough and tough fishing, but he had a blast with the boys on Big Papi! I spent a while talking with the rest of the Adams and Landry families as they waited for him to get back and what a great group of people. Is everyone from Lafayette, Louisiana this cool? Thanks to our good friend Joey Mienville for the introduction!

Kevin Sullivan and Parish Hebert weren’t afraid of the rough water and they faced it head on! The bite didn’t pick up until late in the day, but the crew stayed on the fish and Kevin and Parish were each rewarded with a nice Striped Marlin. The guys spent between 30-45 minutes on each fish and the Marlin weighed in at 130 and 150 lbs!

Donna and Reubin Felkey were unfortunately unable to enjoy a day on the water due to the rough seas… seasick casualties.

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – May 21

Bryan and Denise Miller headed out on Tantrum for the day. Captain Manuel was busy looking for some Marlin. They headed out passed the 1150 and hooked a Striped Marlin, which they got to the boat, he was a nice size, weighing around 160 lbs. They also caught a 15 lb Dorado that they had no problem taking home for dinner. Check out their Marlin in the pic!!

On El Nuevo we had Stephen and David Duncan, Scott Sargeant and Ron Striker out for a 1/2 day. Captain Alex and Jesus did the best fish hunting they could for a 5 hour day and the guys caught 2 SkipJack.

Greg Wooten and his clan headed out for a second day on Big Papi with Captain Julio and Mates Ulysses and Freddie. They finally caught their Striped Marlin which they were hoping for yesterday. They will be back out tomorrow, where hopefully they will do some more catching!

Mary Steiner and her family, Derek and Jordan along with Deb and Dave Keeney headed out on RumRunnin with Captain Javier and Tio Pato for the day. Unfortunately their boat had a technical difficulty and they were sitting not so pretty on the Sea of Cortez. With multiple phone calls to ensure they were ok, we sent a boat out to rescue the Steiners. They came back with plenty of stories about their “Gilligan like” experience. They were real troopers and we appreciate that they took the trip in stride, they said they even want to try again later in the week when Mary’s other son arrives. We sure do hope so, maybe this time we can get them in the fish!

Alex Adams and his family can in today to go out fishing on the 50′ Viking Fearless. These folks from Lousiana were ready to have a good time. It was Mom’s 50th birthday, Happy Birthday! Alex is graduating and so is his brother, I don’t remember with what, but I remember thinking they had to be smart guys to be getting those degrees! So congrats to them. They celebrated by catching and releasing 3 Striped Marlin.

Thank you for reading.

Cabo San Lucas – May 18th,19th & 20th

Yesterday was a really bad day for fishing and we were hoping for a turn for the better this weekend. It has been pretty spotty, but here’s to hoping the water temps keep rising and the fish find their way to your hook!

Friday morning I had a group of guys come in the office led by Corky Cordell including Mark Reed who is here having his bachelor party, Richard Helderman, Seth Maney and Neil Osborne. After finding out these guys were from my own Alma Mater, Western Carolina, I knew they were going to be lots of fun! They headed out on El Nuevo for the day with Alex and Jesus. Unfortunately, they did not have much luck out there, but a Catamount never comes back with his head in the sand! They were in good spirits and had thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Robert and Jeanette Scott were scheduled to fish two days with us. Meeting them was a pleasure, a super nice couple who were celebrating their anniversary, came in with big smiles on their faces and ready to get into the fish. Friday they caught a 130lb Striped Marlin that measured 100 inches. They took turns reeling him in. In all it took about 40 minutes to get him to the boat. Saturday morning was a little different story. They did not have as much luck on the water, but it did not dampen their spirits as they are ready to come back and do it again next year!

Brent Jensen decided to go it alone Saturday morning out on ReelRum with Ramon and Juan. They headed all the way out passed the 1150 Bank and almost immediately hooked a 150 pound Striped Marlin. Brent released the Marlin and tried again. He hooked one more, but lost it. All in all, he had a great day.

Fred Deminico and his party went out on the Marlin Queen for a full day Saturday morning. Unfortunately, the fishing was pretty bad on Saturday as well, and they too came back empty handed.

The Mohr party fished with us throughout the weekend. They had their best day on Friday while fishing out on the 50′ Viking Fearless. They caught and released 3 Striped Marlin Friday, got skunked on Saturday and on Sunday while fishing out on El Nuevo had some luck when Renee caught her first ever Roosterfish. These guys had a lot of fun and were lots of fun to be around! We hope to see them again real soon!

Sunday was not the best day for Sharon Ream and her clan, William Maurieelo, Doug and Shayna Gross. They were out on ReelRum. They said they saw plenty of Marlin, but could not manage to hook one. They had a good time to spite the lack of action.

Alan Smith and his crew, Robert Turner, Salvatore Rosn, David Dunlevy and Joe Muzyka started out their first of three days fishing on two separate boats Friday morning. Armed with Go-Pro Cameras in tow, they were ready to catch some fish. On Tantrum, 7 SkipJack, 1 Yellowtail and 1 Amberjack were caught and on RumRunnin, Alan Smith caught a Striped Marlin that took 52 minutes to reel in. It was 9’1″ and weighed around 160lbs. They raised about 4 more Marlin, but Alan’s was the lone catch on RumRunnin for the day. Saturday morning, after I gave them better instructions on how to use their go-pros they were set to go. They set out on RedRum and RumRunnin this time. They had no luck on RedRum, but on RumRunnin they were into the Marlin once again. Dave Dunlevy caught the Marlin this time, it was 8 1/2 feet and weighed in around 140 lbs. The last day they were out, Sunday, Sal caught his Roosterfish, Joe caught a Striped Marlin, though I am not sure how big either were and Bob also caught a Roosterfish. These guys were a lot of fun and we hope they send some pictures of their trip!

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – May 17th

The winds have changed and it caused our water temperature to drop NINE degrees, NOT good at all for our fish who love to be in our tropically warm waters! With the wind whipping around and making the waters really choppy for our anglers, it made for a rough day out there for all.

We had Kim Hebert and Dale Guidry out on Tantrum for a full day. These guys were coming in from nearby New Orleans, LA. They had fun out there on the water and were great sports being that they did not catch a single fish. Kim told me they barely even saw any fish. We hate that for them and hope the next time they come around our normally warm May water Temperatures will be back to normal!

Next up we had bachelor Richard Kim who brought friends along to celebrate his last days of singledom (is that a word?). Anyway, they headed out on the Marlin Queen for a 1/2 day and experienced the same bad luck. The fish just were not around.

Even The IGFA tournament, hailing 47 teams on 47 boats with over 200 of the worlds “best” anglers had a bad day. All together, they caught a total of 9 Striped Marlin and a Dorado. The bright side was, our boat, El Nuevo RedRum with Captain Alex and Mate Jesus was one of 8 boats that had a catch to report at all. Great job guys!

Last but not least, we had the Mohr’s starting out their first of 4 days on the water on board 50′ Fearless with Captain Benito. They had no luck either, but hopefully, this water temperature will rise and they will catch something before their trip is done!

Thanks for reading, I sure do hope to have some better news to report tomorrow!

Until then…..

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – May 15-16

Marlin have been all over the place lately, but acting a little finicky. We’ve had some awesome clients recently and with the IGFA World Offshore Championships going on things have been a little crazy. One awesome client in particular was Super Dave Stockwall. Dave has fished with us for years and really prefers to fish with Captain Alex on our 33′ Bertram (everyone has their favorites.) Well, among 3 other boats from the RedRum fleet, the 33′ Bertram was invited to fish in the tournament. Dave had his reservations months and months ago, but was cool enough to switch from the 33′ to the 31′. I wish we could say that the fish and karma gods did really right by him for making the change but unfortunately, they only had 1 Marlin during the 2 days of fishing.

May 15th was killer with 75-78 degree water and tons of Marlin action. The 16th a crazy Northwest wind came in and dominated the area. Water temps dropped from 75-78 to 65-68 in 12 hours. Fish disappeared.

Anyway, the Meyers were out on the 15th, 2 Striped Marlin and 1 Mako!

Steve and Julie Ferro fished on Marlin Queen and caught and released 2 Marlin.

Ron Roberson, along with Chelsea and Pat Thomas caught 1 Striped Marlin but had several more playing in their spread.

Then came the cold and wind of the 16th and we only were able to land 1 Marlin on two boats.

GoPro rentals!

GoPro cameras, the coolest HD quality cameras on the market right now, have arrived at RedRum. Whether you want to catch all the action in the cockpit during the fight, or want some killer underwater footage of your prized Marlin as it comes up the boat; the GoPro can handle it. For only $45 you’ll get the use of a GoPro Camera with an underwater housing unit, a head mount, and a pole mount for capturing all the action below the surface. When you get back, we’ll copy your footage onto a flash drive and you can take your video’s and photos home with you!

Check out the short clip below to see what the GoPro is capable of and make sure to reserve one for your next RedRum charter!

Marlin Madness!!!!

The kick-off to the IGFA tourney is today. We have two boats in the tournament, EL Nuevo RedRUm and Colleen’s Magic. Our crews can not help the teams with their fishing, the can only get them on the fish, so we hope they came prepared!

We had two other boats that went out today that were not a part of the tourney. First was the Levy’s. They were out on RedRum with Caqptain Omar and Americo. They had went out on Saturday looking for a Marlin for young Blaine. They were unlucky on Saturday, but not today! Blaine caught her 150 pound Striped Marlin, first one ever! She says it took about an hour to reel in and her arm was “dead”! She could not even lift it, but it was well worth it. Congrats Blaine.

Next was Fritz Hoffman and buddy Jeff along with Faye. These guys did a full day on ReelRum with Ramon and Juan. They caught and released 2 Striped Marlin fishing down passed the 1150.

Colleens Magic apparently had a great team on board today as they landed 5 Striped Marlin and a Shark. That is 200 points per Billfish caught and released. El Nuevo had a different team that did not fair as well, they caught and released only 1 Striped Marlin. There are 3 more days in the tourney and we will keep you posted on how it’s going.

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – Weekender

It has been a good weekend for fishing. The water has been relatively calm and the weather has been beautiful! Some boats were out getting ready for the upcoming IGFA tourney that starts on Monday. We wish all those folks good luck out there!

Saturday we had the Levy’s, Charlotte and Robert along with Blaine. Charlotte already caught her trophy Marlin two years ago, this trip was for Blaine to catch one of her very own. They set out for a full day on RedRum with Captain Omar and Mate Americo. They did not have a bad day catching a Dorado that was around 20lbs which they enjoyed for dinner, but they did not get Blaine’s Marlin! They booked again for Monday though, so we will have our fingers crossed for them!

Ryan went out fishing with Eric Erdman and his crew getting ready for the IGFA out on the Marlin Queen. These guys had 6 Marlin bites but were only able to catch and release 1. I hope they get them hooked and reeled in come Monday!

Erich Overhardt and his crew had to have taken all the Marlin bites there on Big Papi. They came back flying 4 Striped Marlin flags and they caught a monster Dorado that weighed in at 65lbs.

Sunday morning Keith Van Dyke and his buddy fished out on one of our panga’s along the inshore. They had a productive 5 hours catching a Yellowtail, a Roosterfish and an Amberjack.

Last but not least we had Kyle Newcomer and his posse, Randy and Raquel Muessig, Kellie Speybroek, Hope Halasz and Emily Denning out on the Marlin Queen for the day. They were really in search of some “eating’ fish but ended up catching 2 Striped Marlin. I guess they could have been a lot worse off!! They had a great time and we will surely see them again real soon!
