Marlin Madness!!!!

The kick-off to the IGFA tourney is today. We have two boats in the tournament, EL Nuevo RedRUm and Colleen’s Magic. Our crews can not help the teams with their fishing, the can only get them on the fish, so we hope they came prepared!

We had two other boats that went out today that were not a part of the tourney. First was the Levy’s. They were out on RedRum with Caqptain Omar and Americo. They had went out on Saturday looking for a Marlin for young Blaine. They were unlucky on Saturday, but not today! Blaine caught her 150 pound Striped Marlin, first one ever! She says it took about an hour to reel in and her arm was “dead”! She could not even lift it, but it was well worth it. Congrats Blaine.

Next was Fritz Hoffman and buddy Jeff along with Faye. These guys did a full day on ReelRum with Ramon and Juan. They caught and released 2 Striped Marlin fishing down passed the 1150.

Colleens Magic apparently had a great team on board today as they landed 5 Striped Marlin and a Shark. That is 200 points per Billfish caught and released. El Nuevo had a different team that did not fair as well, they caught and released only 1 Striped Marlin. There are 3 more days in the tourney and we will keep you posted on how it’s going.

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – Weekender

It has been a good weekend for fishing. The water has been relatively calm and the weather has been beautiful! Some boats were out getting ready for the upcoming IGFA tourney that starts on Monday. We wish all those folks good luck out there!

Saturday we had the Levy’s, Charlotte and Robert along with Blaine. Charlotte already caught her trophy Marlin two years ago, this trip was for Blaine to catch one of her very own. They set out for a full day on RedRum with Captain Omar and Mate Americo. They did not have a bad day catching a Dorado that was around 20lbs which they enjoyed for dinner, but they did not get Blaine’s Marlin! They booked again for Monday though, so we will have our fingers crossed for them!

Ryan went out fishing with Eric Erdman and his crew getting ready for the IGFA out on the Marlin Queen. These guys had 6 Marlin bites but were only able to catch and release 1. I hope they get them hooked and reeled in come Monday!

Erich Overhardt and his crew had to have taken all the Marlin bites there on Big Papi. They came back flying 4 Striped Marlin flags and they caught a monster Dorado that weighed in at 65lbs.

Sunday morning Keith Van Dyke and his buddy fished out on one of our panga’s along the inshore. They had a productive 5 hours catching a Yellowtail, a Roosterfish and an Amberjack.

Last but not least we had Kyle Newcomer and his posse, Randy and Raquel Muessig, Kellie Speybroek, Hope Halasz and Emily Denning out on the Marlin Queen for the day. They were really in search of some “eating’ fish but ended up catching 2 Striped Marlin. I guess they could have been a lot worse off!! They had a great time and we will surely see them again real soon!

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – May 10

Today is the day for Dawn Rowley! Either she will or she won’t…… She has fished twice already this week and is not leaving Cabo without catching a Marlin! With boyfriend Mark by her side, they set out on ReelRum with Ramon and Juan hoping for the best (as were we!). They travelled all the way out passed the 1150 bank searching for the marlin. FINALLY, Dawn caught her Striped Marlin! It took her about an hour to reel in the 160 pound heavyweight, but she did not waiver, not even letting BF Mark help her out any (she says she feels bad about that…….:))
Check her out in the photo below. Way to go Dawn! mark caught a Mako Shark and all is right in the world! Congrats guys, we can’t wait to have you back!

Next up we had the Muehlenbeins, Mike and Carissa. They did a full day on Tantrum with Captain Manuel and Alex. They had an AWESOME day as well. They caught and released 3 Striped Marlin and had 1 Blue Marlin take the bait and come off the line. First Blue we have seen here this year! They were also fishing the 1150 bank. Great job guys!

Bob’s Birthday Catch!

Hola!

Aboard El Nuevo with Captain Alex and Mate Jesus was Ken Kessler from Chicago with his buddies Cap, Bob and Jerry from Las Vegas. They went out for a half day trip and got into some Marlin at the 1150 in the Sea of Cortez. After trolling for a bit, they tossed in some live bait. And boy did Bob get his Birthday present of the year! He took about an hour to reel in the 180 lb beast, we call a Striped Marlin. It was no sweat off his back. He was all smiles and ready to do it again. Looking good at 70 Bob! Feliz Cumpleanos to you!

The other boat fishing today is prefishing for the IGFA Offshore World Championship Tournament we’ve got coming up on May 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th. We’ll have an update on them soon. Please wish all 4 RedRum Teams we’ve got fishing in the tournament good luck next week!

Saludos!

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – May 7-9

So, the fishing has been a little spotty here in Cabo. Some boats are getting lucky, some not so lucky.

Monday was the last day of fishing for the Don Benningfeild and Tanya Hendrix. They had caught a couple of Marlin over the weekend. They decided to go for somje inshore species and maybe catch something for dinner. They did not do too bad! They caught a Yellowtail which they had cooked up at one of our local favorites, Misiones de Kino.

Chris and Sheri Jackson came in for two days of fishing on Big Papi with Captain Julio, Ulysses and Freddy. They had fun the first day each catching a Striped Marlin, Sheri catching the longest one at 101 inches and 130 lbs and Chris the fat one at 97 inches and 130lbs. They also caught a Mako Shark and a Dorado. Their second day of fishing was not so spectacular as they caught no fish all day long! They still enjoyed their trip and said they would be back!

Dawn Rowley and Mark Zieglgansberger were also signed up for two days of fishing Monday and Wednesday. They were on Tantrum with Manuel and Javier. Monday was their day sans luck and on Wednesday caught a 20lb AmberJack and had a 40lb Dorado on the line for about 15 minutes, they almost had it to the boat but lost it right at end. Dawn can’t go home without something else to show for her trip, so she has booked again for Thursday, we sure hope her luck changes, we will be rooting for her!

Sherry Strait and her hubby were out on Reelrum for a 1/2 day excursion with Ramon & Juan. They had a good day catching a Roosterfish and a Hammerhead shark. They almost caught one more hammerhead but lost it. All that right here on the inshore….. Not real sure how I feel about all the Hammerheads being so close to shore!! ;)

Bachelor Scott Conrad along with buddies Jamie Hensley and Jason Julian did a full day on Big Papi. Scott was lucky and caught his first Striped Marlin that was 102 inches and about 135lbs. Jamie also caught a Striped Marlin that was ALMOST as big as Scott’s. They also caught 2 Dorado to round out the day. Great job guys and best wishes Scott!

Gary and Leslie Pilkington did a shared charter with Barry and TOni Winokur. They did a full day on RedRum with Omar and Americo. They did not have a lot of luck out there, but both couples caught a SkipJack a peice.

Jim McAshan and his crew headed out on Tantrum for a 1/2 day. These guys traveled all the way out by the 1150 bank looking for Marlin, had one near hit, but lost it. Then came back in and had the same luck with a Roosterfish. So, a day full of almosts was all they got…..Maybe next time they will have some better luck!

Wednesday Morning we had birthday boy Wayne Russell and buddy Brad Culmer head out on El Nuevo for the day. Since they are from the Bahamas, they were looking for marlin only. They were in luck! They each caught a Striped Marlin, Waynes being a little bit bigger, around 160lbs, but Brad’s was not much smaller. We are glad they were able to fulfill their Billfish dream here in cabo!

Tim Mullens booked a trip for a bunch of guys here for a bachelor party. Tyler Sanchez is the lucky bachelor and we wish him the best in the future. These guys did a 1/2 day on two boats, RedRum and the Marlin Queen. They had a great time out there on the water and came back having caught and released a Striped Marin and 2 Dorado. Great job guys, were glad y’all had fun!

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – May 5-6

Don Benningfield and Tanya Hendrix were in bright and early this morning to start their first of 2 days fishing trip. They are here on a Play & Stay package and will fish twice! They set out this morning on ReelRum with Ramon & Juan with high hopes! They had a great day fishing out on the Sea of Cortez about 28 miles out. Tanya caught her first ever Striped Marlin that was bigger than she was! It measured 8.6 feet and weighed around 160lbs. Don caught one a little bit smaller, about 110 lbs, both of which were released. Great job guys!

Jay Livingston and buddies William, Joe and Kevin opted for a 1/2 day of fishing on RedRum with Captain Omar and Mate Americo. They caught a Dorado, released a Striped Marlin and caught the first Yellowfin Tuna we have seen in a while.

Mike Dooley and his crew, Frank and Rhonda Monikowski and John and Lisa McNamara also did a 1/2 day on RumRunnin with Javier and Manuel. Frank was the lucky one catching a 140 pound Striped Marlin that took him 27 long minutes to reel in!

Dave Link, Todd and Margaret Rasmussen and Ray Orgill went out on the Marlin Queen for a full day with Danny and Chito. They also had a fun day catching and releasing 2 Striped Marlin.

The Marx and Kaplan’s were the lone boaters on Sunday. They were coming off a Holland cruise line. We were at the dock to meet them at 8am, but unfortunately they were one of the last people off the ship from the tender so they day started a little after 10AM. Starting off this late in the morning can sometimes be a bad time to start fishing when you only have time to fish a few hours. Sorry to say they were skunked. They did let me know on those cruises that they let all of THEIR excursions off the boat first, which is why our guys were last, they did not book through the cruise line. Holland is the only cruise line I know of that does this so be sure you ask about it when booking your charter!!

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report- May 2-4th

Doing some catch up here guys and bundling some reports from the past few days…

Starting to see a lot more Marlin around, they seem to be eating a ton of squid but we are getting our fair share to bite as well. Things have been changing daily with the Stripers, some days they are eating artificial baits, some days live bait and some days they are eating dead bait. Challenging, but fun.

May 2nd-
Aaron Beckman and Kori Grue spent the day on TantRum with Captain Manuel and Mate Edgar and they caught and released 2 Striped Marlin.

Richard Lightfine and Brian Moran fished Rum Runnin’ today and they too got 2 Striped Marlin, but also spent some time inshore and caught and released a nice Roosterfish.

Jim Blackburn and Scott Austin fished the ReelRum today and they were all over the fish, but couldn’t get them to bite. They played with 9 different Marlin, but no takers unfortunately.

May 3rd-
The Marlin Maniacs arrived from Canada this morning! Alan Paleczny and his son Zack, Ryan Peake and his son Brett, and Trevor Lorentz and his son Cam did the Father-Son thing today and they had a great day on the water. Not sure who had the biggest fish, but they certainly all had fun on the rod and reel catching and releasing 4 Striped Marlin!

Fred Chadwick fished with Scott and Marnie Griffith today for a half-day on the TantRum and they spent their time inshore. They caught a bunch of Sierra and had a nice day.

Shannon and John Collins spend the day on ReelRum today… Pretty simple story here, Shannon= Biggger Marlin, John= Smaller Marlin.

Erwin Effler whose son fished with us last year was joined by his buddies Mike, Pete and Dan today on the Rum Runnin’. They wanted to focus on eating fish, and with a few Dorado and a few Yellowfin starting to show up, they had a good day with two nice Yellowfin. They also played with 5 Marlin, but did not hook any.

May 4th-
Eric and Jodi Davis, Carlos Barrington and Roger Peterson fished the ReelRum today and caught 2 Marlin.

Craig and Barbara Eirich have fished with RedRum for many years now, but they are partial to El Nuevo RedRum, our 33′ Bertram. They looked online and didn’t see any availability but stopped by the office on the 3rd to say hi. When they saw that the boat was open the following day, they cancelled plans to go to Todos Santos with friends and spent the day on the water! Two things, 1) you can’t catch and release 2 Striped Marlin in Todos Santos, 2) If you don’t see availability on the website, call to double check!

Kids Kitchen Opens

Beyond the beautiful sand beaches, glitzy clubs and glamorous hotels, lies a dirty little secret on the outskirts of town. Extreme poverty is a huge problem within a few short miles from downtown Cabo. Communities in need of properly built schools and kitchens to feed the youngsters are right around the corner. As a family owned and operated company, we feel it is important to bring to light the needs of the families that lies beyond the tourist district of Los Cabos.

As you may know, our crew here at RedRum and many of you, our clients, have been long time supporters of the Ray Thomas Foundation and many of their amazing community projects. From the kitchen and breakfast programs to the sports programs and the anti-graffiti projects, the Ray Thomas Foundation and Grupo de Apoyo have been at the forefront of community development in Los Cabos for many years.

After two and a half years of hardwork, we are proud to announce that on April 26th the first grand opening was held. The kitchen project for the Leonardo Gastelum Elementary School in Cabo San Lucas is now up and running. Thanks to many of your donations and support, The Ray Thomas Foundation is able to feed 50 hungry kids every morning for breakfast. This is just the beginning, with many more schools in need and kitchens projects planned. With your continued support and donations, more kitchens can be built and more kids can be fed to start off their day with a full belly. For just $200 USD per year, one child is able to eat a healthy, satisfying breakfast each morning to start off their school day. Thank you on behalf of RedRum Sportfishing and The Ray Thomas Foundation for helping out the Cabo San Lucas community. If you are interested in volunteering your time, energy or would like to donate please contact Steve Mills. Steve can be reached at millss7@hotmail.com

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – April 30 & May 1

May is here and the temperature is rising! This is great news for our anglers heading down to Cabo to catch some fish.

Monday morning Alton and wife Jenny Odom were in for their third and final day of fishing on ReelRum with Captain Ramon and Mate Jaun. They had an exceptional day on the water, each catching a Striped Marlin, of about 160lbs. They also caught a Dorado that they took to Misiones de Kino for dinner. I will miss these guys as I got to know them pretty well this past week, good thing is, they will be back in November! We can’t wait.

Alex Alden and Bob Westhall were out on Tantrum for a full day with Manuel and Javier. They had an awesome day catching 5 Yellowtail, 10 Spanish mackerel, 4 Skipjack and a Mako Shark.

Next up was Rick Stasiewich who wanted to take his daughters, Ashley and Chantel deep sea fishing. They were all excited about the adventure and set off on El Nuevo with Alex and Jesus. They fished way out passed the 1150 bank and caught 4 Striped Marlin. 4!!! They were exhausted by the end of the day but said it was well worth it. What a great experience!

Tuesday morning we had the Arnolde family, Ed, Barb and young Austin. It was Austins first time deep sea fishing (that he can remember anyway!) and he had his mind set on catching a Roosterfish. He was in luck! He battled the Roosterfish for about 10 minutes before getting it inside the boat. Great job Austin. Hopefully, he will send some pictures to add to my blog! His Dad also caught the fish he wanted, a large 102 inch long Striped Marlin, which took him a little longer to reel in, about 25 minutes. Both of which are being made into nice trophies to display at home. I hope they enjoy!
