Is the Finger Bank starting to get hot?

Hola hola,

Just got word from a very reliable source that the Finger Bank is starting to heat up. This came from one of my more reliable sources and one of the top Captains in the game. I was told to keep this info “under my hat,” but if I didn’t share this with you readers, how would you know? Book your boat and then book your flights and get down here and hit the Finger Bank while it is hot. My last trip up there we had double digit Dorado, Tuna and Marlin, all in the same day.

Remember, you will want a twin engine boat, so you are looking at RedRum, El Nuevo RedRum, Marlin Queen, or something in the 40-50′ range. Your fishing day is going to be more like 10 hours rather than 8 hours, and we have to charge a fuel premium of $300 to do a trip to the Finger Banks. That being said, if you have fished Cabo many times and done the Gordo, San Jaime and Golden Gate Banks already, you have to fish the Finger!

I am not posting this info on any fishing forums or publishing it in any of the publications I write for. This info is for the greater RedRum family only, please keep this to yourself.

Give me a shout to set up your trip,
Ryan

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report- Mid November recap

Since my last report, it’s been all about the Yellowfin here in Cabo San Lucas. That is if you can keep the Dorado off the Lures!
Finishing up the tournament season was the Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot. 107 teams this year made for some serious prize money and as always, the “fish hard, party harder” moniker was truly tested. With 11 teams fishing under the RedRum Sportfishing banner we had more than 10% of the teams in the tournament on our side. With nearly 30 Yellowfin over 100 lbs weighed in, this was one of the most successful hauls for tournament entrants that we have seen in years. As many of you readers know, Tuna can be around one day and gone the next. You can get into 15lb footballs or 100lb cows, you just never know. This years event was certainly unique in that every angler knew they needed something north of 100 and closer to 200 to get in the money. The eventual overall winner weighed in at 213lbs, and took home $36,720. Not bad for an $800 entry fee. The big winner was southern California’s own Brett Eller and his guys on True VII. Their 206lb Yellowfin took second place overall and more importantly all the jackpots on day 2 for a $158,520 pay day. With so many big fish hitting the scales it seemed like the amount of “the one that got away” stories rose exponentially as well. If I had a Nickel for everyone that lost a 250lber, we might have made our entry fee money back. Overall the RedRum teams did great highlighted by Randy Matz’s HillBilly Yacht Club team fishing aboard La Nueva RedRum for the 4th year in a row. They topped the leader board on day 2 for a short while, then slipped to 2nd, then 3rd and finally landed just out of the money. That being said, as you can see in the picture, their 172lber and 150lber were both beautiful Tuna! Congrats and thank you to all our teams this year.

After the tournaments were said and done, we could finally relax a little and get back to fishing for the bread and butter clientele that make up our wonderful family of anglers; the guys and gals that come down and want a great experience, a shot at catching some fish, and a bang for their buck. We’ve been slamming the Dorado, with nearly all the boats the last few weeks getting their limits early. Quite a few Blue Marlin haved moved in recently, with several RedRum boats releasing 200-300lb fish up the Pacific coast near Poza Cota. The Wahoo bite is also pretty good, with one of local boats catching 11 in 3 days. All the ‘hoos have been in the 30-40lb range, but we all know they eat nice at any size.

Outside weather temps have just dropped enough in the last week or so that a sweatshirt is needed in the mornings (at least for this Gringo that has been down south a while.) With that in mind, we should have at least two more months of warm sea surface temps and wonderful action on the Tuna, Wahoo, Dorado, and Marlin front.

Give us a shout at 760-481-7667 or shoot us an email at info@redrumcabo.com, we actually still have plenty of dates from now until New Years. While it isn’t often published December fishing in Cabo can be epic.

Best regards,

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report – A Great First Day at RedRum!

Hey everybody! My name is Tiffany and I am the new office manager here at Redrum. I am so excited to be a part of the Redrum team and am looking forward to getting to know all of Redrum’s extended family and friends! I am originally from Charlotte, NC, I attended Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. I later moved to Atlanta, GA to be closer to my family and spent eight years there. I have been living in Mexico City with my husband Benny for the past three years. We are looking forward to the more relaxed atmosphere that Cabo San Lucas has to offer. So whenever you guys have any questions or concerns, I will be here to help!

Now, on to the fish report for November 9, 2011. Yesterday was a great day out on the water for all of our boats, especially for the Dorado! Don Heim who has been fishing Cabo for years brought buddies Rob Penrod and Erik Gellerman. This was Dons first time fishing with Redrum and Captain Omar and Mate Americo were his hosts for the day on the 31 foot RedRum. It was Eric’s first time fishing and he caught the only sailfish of the day! They caught an additional 7 Dorado, so what a great day for those guys!

Dan Miller and his family headed off on Cabo Marlini with Captain Teo, they a good day catching multiple Dorado.

George Snyder and clan were off on Tantrum with Juan and Ramon, where they caught a Yellowfin Tuna, a Wahoo and two Dorado!

Roman Guerra and lady friend were out on ReelRum for a half day with Edgar and Jesus fishing the Los Arcos area and had a productive day catching a total of 4 Dorado!

Dale Dagen and crew headed out on the Marlin Queen with Captain Danny and his mate Chito. These guys hooked two Dorado and a Striped Marlin measuring 110 inches!!

The Johnson party went out on Cabo Chica and Fish Tales, these guys had an awesome day catching Dorado and some Billfish.

Last but definitely not least we had Ed Raquel’s party go out on RumRunnin with Captain Javier looking to score some tuna. And boy did they score! They went out 33 miles before finding the Tuna but were successful and came back with a total of 8 Yellowfin Tuna. Robin Vandenbroeck said, “This was one of the top ten days of fishing in my whole life”, and as a seasoned fisher woman, that says a lot!!

Until next time,
Tiffany

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report- RedRum Recap-August

The late summer/early fall bite in Cabo San Lucas is always exciting and this year is no exception. Big fish have the Captains and Mates at RedRum Sportfishing anxiously awaiting the next bite on every trip. With huge 130+lb Sailfish to 200+lb Yellowfin Tuna, the arrival of the Blue Marlin and Dorado, and the ever present Striper bite; Cabo is hot right now. Sea surface temperatures in the mid to high 80′s have wrapped around the cape and fishing has been phenomenal as of late. Three to four different species per day has not been unusual and anglers and Captains alike are enjoying a bite that is generally only 5-15 miles from the Marina.

Bait has been easy to come by, with Caballito being the most accessible. RedRum crews are also bringing along 5-10 frozen Ballyhoo on each trip just to make sure they have another option. From stitched ballyhoo on the shotgun pole to live Caballito on the kite fishing rig, we are getting bit with whatever we throw in the water.

Big Yellowfin have been caught anywhere from 5-25 miles out, mixed in with the Porpoise. Just last week we had a boat bring in two 70-80lb class Yellowin that hit a hoochy and a cedar plug while trolling. Once hooked up the mate threw a live Caballito and hooked a 100+lb Yellowfin, another angler on the boat also tossed out a live Caballito and he too got bit by a 100+lb Yellowfin. You’ll also be happy to hear that earlier this week some southern California guys got into some really nice Yellowfin with the biggest one going 180lbs (pictured above.)

The Blue Marlin bite has come on like it always does, slow but steady. We caught 17 Blues in July on 125 or so trips, releasing all but two that died. So far in August we have nearly that number. Haven’t heard of any real big Blues yet, mostly in the 200-500lb range. Expect both the size and numbers to go up as we get further into the fall.

Sailfish have been a blast this year with some serious size to them! We aren’t talking about the Costa Rican and Florida peanut Sails, we are seeing a lot of Sails over 100lbs and a bunch of pigs that are in the 130-150lb range (pictured below.) Tons of fun to see Sails of that size getting up and out of the water, tail dancing with that huge sail splayed out.

Finally, with the super warm water we are starting to see more and more Dorado. Most boats are getting 3-5 Dorado bites a day if not more. Nothing of ridiculous size yet, mostly 15-40lb fish, but when we start to see more Dorado as we have recently, the bigger ones aren’t usually too far behind. If I was a betting man I would say we will start to see a few 55-65+lb Bull Dorado during the month of September.

Now is a great time to get down to Cabo and get some practice in before the tournament season starts up in October and November or fill the freezer with filets for the winter. As always we are happy to vacuum seal and freeze your catch, free of charge. To learn more about RedRum Sportfishing and our operation visit www.redrumcabo.com or give us a call at 760-481-7667 (socal number but it rings in Cabo.) We are a family run, american owned fleet that has been fishing the waters of Cabo since 1985.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Tournaments Just Around The Corner

With big fish in the water, Cabo is itching to get the tournament season underway

The end of summer and beginning of fall means we are that much closer to “tournament time” in Cabo San Lucas. Starting in early October and running through the first week of November, each week features another major tournament and another huge check for the lucky anglers who take to the stage. With 4 major tournaments and over $5 million dollars changing hands throughout the tournament season, Cabo San Lucas will once again attract fishermen from all over the world. Hundreds of anglers, Captains and Mates will pull out every color lure, rub every lucky coin, and go through all the pre-tournament superstitions they have to hopefully raise the trophy and the check at the end of each weekend. The buzz around the marina can’t be ignored, with big fish making their way back to the marina each day, Cabo is getting antsy!

Kicking things off will be, as always, the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament from Oct 11th-15th, with three days of fishing. An IGFA World Championship qualifying event that has seen it’s winner move on to take the Championship several times, the LCB attracts some of the top teams from the area and around the world. While it’s moniker may deceive you, the LCB not only has a heaviest billfish and release division, but also Dorado, Tuna and Wahoo jackpots as well.

Next up are the two Cabo area Bisbee Tournaments, the Bisbee Offshore and the Bisbee Black and Blue. The Bisbee Offshore or “little Bisbee” runs from October 14th-16th with two days of fishing. The Bisbee Offshore, like the LCB has a release division, a heaviest Marlin division and a game fish division (Tuna and Dorado.) The Offshore, while nick-named the “little Bisbee” still brings big cash pay-outs for each of the different divisions. The Bisbee Offshore is also an IGFA Championship qualifying event.

The Bisbee Black and Blue, “the worlds richest fishing tournament,” runs from Oct 18th-22nd with three days of fishing. There’s no messing with the Dorado and Tuna here folks, unless you are trying to make bait. This tournament is all about the billfish. With only two divisions, heaviest fish and most releases the competition is fierce. With 6 daily jackpots ranging from $200 to $10,000 a day, the cash adds up quick and more million dollar pay-outs have come from this tournament than any other. The Bisbee Black and Blue is also and IGFA Championship qualifying event.

Finally, the Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot with two days of fishing from November 2nd-5th rounds out the tournament season. For those that haven’t been a part of Western Outdoor News’ Tuna Jackpot, and don’t know much about it their slogan is and always has been “fish hard, party harder!” With events each night and two days of fishing, this is a tournament that attracts over 100 teams that love to come down to Cabo, enjoy the nightlife and let a few benjamins ride on the days catch. Marlin won’t win you any points during the WON Tuna Jackpot, which I learned in 2009 when I landed a 600+lb Black Marlin while trolling for Yellowfin, but it’s not only about the Tuna either. Dorado and Wahoo divisions always make things interesting and while the entry fee is super reasonable at $800, daily jackpots that reach $10,000 can be entered for those willing to party less and fish harder.

RedRum Sportfishing along with the rest of Cabo San Lucas is anxiously awaiting the beginning of the tournament season, and with teams that have taken the stage in all the tournaments mentioned above we have a lot to be excited about. If you are interested in fishing one of these tournaments or would like more information about them, please visit our website at www.redrumcabo.com or give us a call at 760-481-7667 and ask for Ryan (it’s a US number, but rings in Mexico.)

Thank you and Farewell!

Hello peeps!

As those close to me know, I am not good with goodbyes so I do apologize if this is just a short note. I truly am humbled to have worked with RedRum Sportfishing, I am proud of the achievements that we accomplished and am thankful for every lesson learned.

It’s with great sadness that I walk out of this office and close the door behind me for the very last time.
Ryan, Brooke and John: Thank you for allowing me to work with you guys, for the opportunity given, for your confidence in me, trust and above all for your friendship. I have learned a lot in these past two years and now that I start off a new journey back in Mexico City, I know I will take all that you’ve taught me.
