Cabo San Lucas Fishing Tournaments Just Around The Corner

With big fish in the water, Cabo is itching to get the tournament season underway

The end of summer and beginning of fall means we are that much closer to “tournament time” in Cabo San Lucas. Starting in early October and running through the first week of November, each week features another major tournament and another huge check for the lucky anglers who take to the stage. With 4 major tournaments and over $5 million dollars changing hands throughout the tournament season, Cabo San Lucas will once again attract fishermen from all over the world. Hundreds of anglers, Captains and Mates will pull out every color lure, rub every lucky coin, and go through all the pre-tournament superstitions they have to hopefully raise the trophy and the check at the end of each weekend. The buzz around the marina can’t be ignored, with big fish making their way back to the marina each day, Cabo is getting antsy!

Kicking things off will be, as always, the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament from Oct 11th-15th, with three days of fishing. An IGFA World Championship qualifying event that has seen it’s winner move on to take the Championship several times, the LCB attracts some of the top teams from the area and around the world. While it’s moniker may deceive you, the LCB not only has a heaviest billfish and release division, but also Dorado, Tuna and Wahoo jackpots as well.

Next up are the two Cabo area Bisbee Tournaments, the Bisbee Offshore and the Bisbee Black and Blue. The Bisbee Offshore or “little Bisbee” runs from October 14th-16th with two days of fishing. The Bisbee Offshore, like the LCB has a release division, a heaviest Marlin division and a game fish division (Tuna and Dorado.) The Offshore, while nick-named the “little Bisbee” still brings big cash pay-outs for each of the different divisions. The Bisbee Offshore is also an IGFA Championship qualifying event.

The Bisbee Black and Blue, “the worlds richest fishing tournament,” runs from Oct 18th-22nd with three days of fishing. There’s no messing with the Dorado and Tuna here folks, unless you are trying to make bait. This tournament is all about the billfish. With only two divisions, heaviest fish and most releases the competition is fierce. With 6 daily jackpots ranging from $200 to $10,000 a day, the cash adds up quick and more million dollar pay-outs have come from this tournament than any other. The Bisbee Black and Blue is also and IGFA Championship qualifying event.

Finally, the Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot with two days of fishing from November 2nd-5th rounds out the tournament season. For those that haven’t been a part of Western Outdoor News’ Tuna Jackpot, and don’t know much about it their slogan is and always has been “fish hard, party harder!” With events each night and two days of fishing, this is a tournament that attracts over 100 teams that love to come down to Cabo, enjoy the nightlife and let a few benjamins ride on the days catch. Marlin won’t win you any points during the WON Tuna Jackpot, which I learned in 2009 when I landed a 600+lb Black Marlin while trolling for Yellowfin, but it’s not only about the Tuna either. Dorado and Wahoo divisions always make things interesting and while the entry fee is super reasonable at $800, daily jackpots that reach $10,000 can be entered for those willing to party less and fish harder.

RedRum Sportfishing along with the rest of Cabo San Lucas is anxiously awaiting the beginning of the tournament season, and with teams that have taken the stage in all the tournaments mentioned above we have a lot to be excited about. If you are interested in fishing one of these tournaments or would like more information about them, please visit our website at www.redrumcabo.com or give us a call at 760-481-7667 and ask for Ryan (it’s a US number, but rings in Mexico.)

Thank you and Farewell!

Hello peeps!

As those close to me know, I am not good with goodbyes so I do apologize if this is just a short note. I truly am humbled to have worked with RedRum Sportfishing, I am proud of the achievements that we accomplished and am thankful for every lesson learned.

It’s with great sadness that I walk out of this office and close the door behind me for the very last time.
Ryan, Brooke and John: Thank you for allowing me to work with you guys, for the opportunity given, for your confidence in me, trust and above all for your friendship. I have learned a lot in these past two years and now that I start off a new journey back in Mexico City, I know I will take all that you’ve taught me.

Thank you all once again, for reading my posts, for your comments, for your time.

Dorado have arrived in droves- Cabo San Lucas Weekly Update 7/17-7/24

This week was an interesting one to say the least with the formation, and ultimately the disappearance of Hurricane Dora. Dora never made it close to Cabo (200 miles at it’s closest,) not even a little rain unfortunately. I know most readers/tourists could care less for rain when they are down in Cabo, but we really need it right now. Anyway, as with any pressure system and resulting storm, you never really know what to expect when it comes to the seas and the fishing.

With mid 80 degree water wrapped all around the cape, we had some great fishing this past week. A mixed bag of species is running around the Herradura, the Jaime Bank and even up towards the Golden Gate. Large schools of black Porpoise have held nice 30-60lb Yellowfin Tuna. A few Wahoo and Sailfish have been slamming the spreads, Striped Marlin have been consistent, and a few small Blue Marlin in the 150-300lb range were mentioned around the docks. Biggest development in fishing the past week or so has been the emergence of the Dorado, finally.

While we had seen a few Yellow flags flying here and there so far this year, this past week it looked the marina was repainted Yellow. Every boat had several Dorado flags flying at the end of the day, and some nice size fish in the 30-50lb range are coming back with the happy clients, along with the standard 10-20lb fish.

Just when I had perfected a Blackened Yellowfin with a creamy Cilantro sauce, the Dorado come in… Tough living, but someone has to make sure all the RedRum Sportfishing Clients are happy everyday.

Welcome Aboard Jerry!

Hey Guys,

I am glad to inform that we have found the next office manager for RedRum Sportfishing…of course this saddens me a lot because this means that my last days with RedRum are closer and this chapter in my life is coming to an end. Just a couple of weeks and I’ll be out of here. I decided to quit RedRum to open up a small business back in Mexico City and the whole RedRum Staff has been very supportive about this.

I know that Jerry will be a great office manager. He was born in Mexico City but grew up in Escondido California and then moved to Monterrey Mexico a few years later. He has a major in International Business and has worked in the hotel industry for the last 10 years. Has a 5 yr old son
who he enjoys and loves spending time with, he’s also interested in Watching movies and playing the guitar.

Jerry doesn’t have much experience in fishing but he is always eager to learn new things.

Let’s welcome Jerry Sanchez, who will be the one to greet you guys with a smile every morning and provide top of the line Customer Service!

Welcome aboard Jerry!

REDRUM SPORTFISHING VOTED “BEST FISHING CHARTER” in LOS CABOS
Over 5,000 tourists and residents vote Redrum Sportfishing the “Best Fishing Charter” in Los Cabos in Cabo Social Magazine’s 2010 Best of Cabo “Reader’s Choice” Awards

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico:  Redrum Sportfishing has won the “Reader’s Choice” award for “Best Fishing Charter” in Los Cabos in Cabo Social Magazine’s Best of Cabo 2010 awards contest. “Reader’s Choice” award winners were selected by over 5,000 readers of Cabo Social Magazine, who voted for their favorite Los Cabos businesses. Covering everything from luxury products to celebrity features, Cabo Social Magazine is published three times a year, reaching well-to-do Cabo residents and visitors alike.

“This is a people’s choice award, which has a lot of meaning,” says Ryan Donovan, spokesperson for Redrum Sportfishing. “It’s the most grassroots way to rate the best fishing charter in Los Cabos, and we’re very proud that people have chosen us as the top sportfishing outfit.”

A family-owned and operated business, Redrum has deep roots in Cabo San Lucas. John Donovan, who oversees the fishing charter operation, has been fishing the waters off Cabo since 1984. He is helped by son Ryan (who has fished in Cabo since 1999 and has taken the stage at many of Cabo’s top tournaments), Ryan’s Spanish-speaking wife Brooke (who arranges condo accommodations for clients) and 12 full-time captains, mates and mechanics.

They pride themselves on offering great customer service, which includes being upfront and honest, even if that sometimes includes disappointing news. “If your dream is to catch marlin, but they’re not biting right now, we’ll tell you that,” says Donovan. “There are no surprises when you fish with us. And we tell you from the outset exactly what your charges are – we won’t spring an extra tax on you the morning of your charter or ask you later to pay for bait or a dock fee.”

Many of the crew have remained loyal to and worked with Redrum for over a decade. “From the owners right down to the guys who clean the boats, we’re all Team Redrum here,” says Donovan. “We treat our staff right; they treat our customers right.”

Treating the customers well is one reason why Redrum has a repeat client base of 65 to 70%, adds Donovan. “Once people come fishing with us and get to know the staff and fishing guides, they’re hooked. Lots of our customers have timeshares here in Cabo and they see us year after year.”

Redrum Sportfishing operates premier fishing charters out of Cabo San Lucas, known as the “Marlin Capital of the World.” Their fleet of seven top-of-the-line boats ranges from one of the fastest 28-footers in Cabo to a first-class, 53-foot, twin-engine yacht for a luxurious day on the water. Redrum caters to both seasoned anglers and those casting a rod for the first time, and is one of the few charter operations to offer kite fishing.

RedRum and Baja Luxury Fishing Villas Writers’ Camp 2011 Video

Check out this killer new video from our writers camp last month, with underwater Marlin releases! This is action from day 2 of our fishing adventure when we were targeting strictly Marlin. Day 1 was filled with Yellowfin. There is also a bit of footage from the afternoon on day 2 when we caught and released a huge hammerhead.

When we say Catch and Release, we get into it!

Tiny Hands, Tiny feet, there’s someone new for you to meet!

Ryan and Brooke Donovan have expanded their house by two feet. They’re Dalton Bruin’s!

We know this is not a fish report but it will top any fish report we have done in the past or future.

On Monday June 27th, 2011, we welcomed Dalton Bruin Donovan in this wonderful world of fishermen and women. He was born in Cabo San Lucas to the very proud parents.

Both Mom and Bruin (as he will go by) are doing great. Our plans are to get him out fishing soon and setting some world records.

Bruin definitely beats Ryan’s Huge Black Marlin landed in 2008 and the jackpot winning Yellowfin of 2009! This is Ryan’s biggest “Catch” ever.

We thank all our RedRum friends and family for all there help the past nine months

San Franciscans and the mighty Sword fish!

You probably already found out through facebook, twitter and what not, that on Friday we had a group of guys from San Francisco fighting a sword for more than 9 hours?? No? Well here’s the scoop!

On Friday, I received a call from Captain Omar and first Mate Americo telling me that they would arrive a bit late because they were fighting a BIG FISH. I right away thought it was a Marlin, little did I know they were talking about a Sword Fish, who’s weight was 320+ Lbs.

It’s been 3 years 3 months since RedRum fought and landed this kind of fish. The one caught a while back weighed 260 Lbs. After so long and patiently waiting for the next big catch on Friday that wait came to an end. Michael Black, Shawn Meroni, Mark Roberts, Brendan Morris, Conrad Castor and Sameer Advani where at the airport Thursday about to catch their flight to Cabo San Lucas when they called asking for prices on fishing charter. The information was given and they were going to decide which boat they wanted to take, if any.

A few minutes later I was back on the phone with Mike and they had decided to book the 31′ RedRum. Friday Morning came and it was almost 7 AM…no sign of this group, I started dialing the number provided to remind them of the charter, when in Cabo you know it’s normal to party out a night before and I just wasn’t sure if this was the case. As soon as I hung up the phone, they walked into the office ready for their trip.

These awesome, down to earth guys, were ready for their trip. Omar and Americo walked them down to the boat and off they went into the unexpected. By 11 AM, they had a sword fish on the line, which was caught on live bait with a 50 Lb fishing line and 80 Lb test leader, Custom made fishing pools and shimano reel.

By 6:30 PM, every member of the RedRum family was at the dock waiting patiently to know if the fish had been defeated during the fight, we weren’t sure if they were going to land it since it had been over 7 hours of fighting and Mike and team were a bit tired and ready to give up….All of the sudden Omar contacts us and says “It’s gone to a better life” The cheering started, everyone was stoaked and you can just feel the great vibe at the dock, beers on RedRum, said Ryan.

At 8:30, after a couple of beers and talking with the security dock manager (who wanted to kick us out), RedRum’s headlights start coming in, everyone received Mike Black and his team members with claps, high fives and cheers.

John Donovan had been on the phone with us most part of the day waiting for updated news, I bet he wished he had been here with everyone, it was a fun night. They guys told us how many turns it took each to fight the fish, how they were about to give up on it and how happy and excited they were.

A small interview, thousands of pictures and 6 tired guys was the outcome of this amazing fishing experience. Enjoy one of the many pictures taken and let us know what you think!

220 Lbs Yellowfin Tuna caught by James Wade

Hey All,
Wow, TGIF! so many things going on this week and many many more in the upcoming one! So many changes as well. Just a few more days ’til Ryan and Brooke can hold their firstborn baby in their arms…future heir of RedRum sportfishing is a few days away from waking up in beautiful Cabo!
On Another note, yesterday’s fishing was SUPERB! Ranger Magers and his buddy James Wade fished twice this week. Their first trip took place on June 22nd with their total catch consisting of 12 yellowfin tunas. 20-25 each NOT BAD for day 1 and for a little sharpy sea. Yesterday June 23rd they also fished same crew Omar and Americo from our 31′ RedRum. Their final number of fish caught on day 2 was only 3 Yellowfin tuna a smaller number compared to a day before.
The only difference was that during yesterday’s fishing, one of the Tuna’s they caught weighed 220 Lbs, was caught by James Wade from Dallas Texas! the other two tunas were an average of 20-25 Lbs, but this huge tuna definitely breaks the record so far for this year.
Congratulations to Randy and James for their outstanding performance.
You can check out a picture of the Tuna at the end of the fish report.
From Houston Texas we also had Jon olson and Chad fisihing on a hald day trip with Alex and Manuel on our 33′ Nuevo. Their catch consisted of 2 Dorados.
Michael and Crystal McFarlen fished on tantrum with Ramon and Jesus and caught a nice striped marlin 8 ft 140 Lbs. They had a blast out there. Congratulations you two!
And Jeffery Dietz also fished on Wednesday on Tantrum with ramon and Juan and he caught a total of 6 yellowfin tuna and 1 Dorado.
Thanks for Reading and enjoy the pics!
